Knot to use with #30+ line?
« on: May 10, 2007, 11:02:00 AM »
When using line (usually leaders) greater than #30 (fluoro, mono, etc..), i find it really tough to tie a decent knot. What knot is easiest to tie with this line?

Thanks!
Nick

Depends on what I am trying to accomplish with the knot.  Are you tying to a swivel, to another line, etc.
As catfish said, the palomar is strong and fast to tie.  It is the knot to use when tying a snap swivel to braided line as it will not slip.  A clinch knot will slip on braid and then it's bye bye rig.

If tying a leader to a swivel I will use the clinch knot.  The higher the line test the fewer turns needed for the knot.

I use that a lot myself.  Then thing I like about it, it is so simple you can tie it in the dark and not make a mistake.   ::) 8)

Hi,

I agree with what Irish said. It depends.

Are you joining two lines; tying to terminal tackle; tying to the hook.

I have snelled hooks with 100 lb. test mono. I snell almost all of my hooks. If I cannot snell them, I use a crimp.

I use a uni knot for almost everything else, even joining two lines.

Another useful knot is a surgeons knot. You can tie a strong loop with any test with that.

The key to tying the knot is to wet it so that you can draw it tight! Remember that knots do not fail until they slip (the heat from the friction is a disaster).

So, with 40 lb. flouro or mono, snelling to the hook and using a uni knot for terminal tackle would be my advice. Uni knots are fast to tie, even in the dark. The yare also easy to pull tight.

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

I use the heavier line primarily for leader material so it would be tied to a swivel and/or hook eye.

Thanks for the info!

The clinch would be the knot for the leader to the swivel and a snell for the hook onto the leader.   t^

I have never had a clinch knot slip on me when I tied  Braid to swivel. hmmm I have used the Palomer knot .. it is very easy to tie, but it seems to easy.. I have to get theat out of my head.. ;D
