Things to do for a motor that's been sitting
« on: December 03, 2008, 10:28:22 AM »
My boat has pretty much sat idle all year. What should I replace or service next spring to ensure a trouble free season.

I'm thinking:
- New batteries
- New zinc anodes
- replace water pump
- replace fuel filter/water separator

Anything else to watch out for?

Check EVERYTHING! A boat just sitting there not being used, is not good for any of the parts. I would be concerned with the fuel going bad & motor not preped for storage(those parts need to be oiled(Fogged) for protection during long term storage). Again, check EVERYTHING.  <'((((><

Thermostats should be changed after a lay up that long.

Actually, I do mine every year just for cheap insurance.  TT^

I would be concerned with some of the Carb seals..  I lost all of mine after a 1 year lay up..  Motor may run fine. but under a strain.. she won't have it.

Not hard to rebuild..  Most kit's come with directions..

I would remove the spark plugs, spray in some oil or PB Blaster and turn over by hand. Just to make sure the rings are no stuck.
