Gambler trip 1/25
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:30:56 AM »
got up yesterday morning at 3:30,picked up my son at 4:30 and headed to Pt. Pleasant to get on the Gambler open off shore trip for cod, pollack, and ling.we got there before 6 and able to get good spots on the stern.boat left the dock at 7 and the ride was almost 3 hours to his first spot, started fishing about 10,the first drop produced dogfish for most then a pollack came up that I seen, not that big and guy near us pulled in a cod, which looked to be 10 to 12 pounds and eventually was the pool winner.stayed here until around 12:30 or later.all me and my son had managed to catch were a few ling, most did no better.really not good fishing the first stop,me hoping he didn't put us on his best spot first.the next move took about a 1/2 hour and on this stop he tried a short drift with no success before anchoring, well we dropped our lines here and started off as another good dog day, did manage to get a couple ling here and also forgot to mention got a sea pout on the first stop that I had never seen, mate said they are good eating,so put it in the cooler.we ended up with 5 ling and the sea pout.the boat pulled anchor and headed in at a little after 3.the water conditions were great all day, pretty much almost a flat sea and the temperature wasn't to bad either, felt the temperature a little later in the day at the second stop.Son and myself were talking to the mate John who was a great help all day, asked how they usually do on these trips,he said they are hit and miss, some days they do real good,we just happen to hit the miss day.boat back in dock before 6 and we got home around 7:30 after stopping at a parkway rest stop to get something to eat.it was still nice to get out and spend the day with my son.    Kez

Nice report Kez. This time of year is always iffy with the catch. Getting out is the important thing, having a great catch is secondary.

Sounds like you had a nice day on the water with your son. That is priceless.  t^

nice report kez! if i can offer u what worked pretty well for me.....i was dropping fish left and right in the 4/0 bait holder hook rigs....switched over to a double dropper loop about 6 inches off the sinker and down sized to 2/0 circle hooks....worked like a charm!!!!
maybe downsizing those hooks can help you out next trip! we're gonna go in feb after valentines day if u want to try the night trip with us!

used similar rigs I made using gamakatsu 3/0 bait holder hooks, which worked very well for me on an off shore seabass trip the week before.the problem wasn't dropping fish or missing fish, the bite just wasn't there. 5hrug   Kez
