Flounder season opener
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:38:57 AM »
5hrug I sent emails to the NJ Fish and Wildlife and the Marine Fisheries to request the opening of the season to be changed from Monday, 3/23, to the 21st or 22nd. This would give the weekend anglers a chance to participate on opening day and basically extend their season. Here are their replies:

NJ Fish and Wildlife: I will forward your message to our Marine Fisheries staff for review.  As you are probably aware, our seasons are determined at least in part by the federal government.

ASMFC: I have forwarded your message to the New Jersey Commissioners -- David Chanda, Tom Fote and Assemblyman Fisher -- for their consideration of your request.  The Commission does not set winter flounder seasons,  the states do.

Looks like they are both passing the buck!  nts

I have also run this by the JCAA.

I think beurocrats get paid by the amount of work they don't do...

BTW...I heard rumors of a coastwide flounder moratorium.

I dont think it matters when it opens as long as it opens, last year was on easter and everyone bitched ,it was on a sunday and there were less than 10 boats to be seen out there where we were fishing

opening day for a salt water species that isn't stocked isn't a big deal.  I understand that opening day of trout season when they are stocked would be a problem due to the trout getting fished out.  This shouldn't matter in salt water since the species is there, and not stocked, they shouldn't be fished out.  You do have to find them though.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

the nice (or not) thing is if they can't or won't agree on and publish them, last year's regs will remain in effect...
