Corosion in 2 yr old Merc optimax
« on: March 31, 2009, 09:14:13 AM »
Was just wondering if anyone on this board who owns a Merc Optimax or knows of someone who does has had trouble with corrosion with their engine. I took the boat to my mechanic to give the engine the once over before putting it in the water 2 weeks ago when he found the starter and alternator to be coroded.  The starter was frozen and the alternator wasn't working properly.  Any feedback as to why this happened would be apprechiated.

I had 2 opti's in the past 4 years and they both sucked ,I got rod of them as fast as I could .I didnt like the noise compaired to a 4 stroke and I had alot of minor problems that were due to people at merc being lazy .I had wires that were twisted and kinked right from the factory .I had seals go and some other small trouble

I purchased my 225 Optimax in the spring of 07 and it has not hiccuped once. No corrision anywhere and my boat is wet slipped from April to Dec.

I looked at 4 Strokes but the added weight was going to bury the scuppers on my boat.

Really don't want to turn this into a "bashing" thread, but two years ago the larger HPDI's were not enjoying a stellar reputation.

I don't see many Opti's for service but the Merc's I do see are in pretty good shape corrosion wise. I spray all outboard powerheads with a product called Corrosion X. I's not cheap at about $16 a can but don't even think of comparing it to WD-40. We used this stuff religiously at one of the Grady dealers I worked at and I got hooked. Lacey Marine is where I ususlly get.
