Lately I have been having luck using the Gamakatsu Octopus circle hook size 7/0 while clamming.  sizes 5/0 to 8/0 work to.

you have to break the habit of setting the hook when using circles, very hard to do.   rgmn

Once you get used to them, they are great and makes release of short fish better. You still get a gut hooked fish once and awhile.

One tip to slow the gut hooked fish problem is to use a shortened leader on the fish finder rig.  With that said,I have not had to many problems with gut hooked fish on longer leaders.

I tie mine from 8 - 9" and if the fish are just nibbling on the bait and not taking it, I will go to a longer leader some where between 12 - 18"s.

Right now I have the 12 - 18" leaders on simply because I have noticed the times which I have been out they are just mouthing the bait around the edges and not putting the whole bait in the mouth.  By giving them something a little longer to play with gives them a the confidence to put it solidly in their mouths and swim off, there by allowing the hook to set in the side of the jaw.

Happy Catching

I like the 8/0 Gami circle hooks.  Either fish with loose drag or with a baitrunner type reel.  Let the fish pick it up and run then just tighten the drag/disengage baitrunner and let the tension from fish set the hook.

I think, the chances for release/survival is increased with circles. Many still use both however.
