Mechanical question - Boat steering

Relatively new boat owner. I have 22 ft. 1993 Mako with a 200 hp Suzuki. While fishing in LE this weekend I came into a little sand, when I went to steer out of it I lost all ability to turn the motor. The steering wheel now free wheels (360 degrees). No obvious signs of damaged of broken equipment and the engine is not able to be turned (back to straight) by hand. Any ideas on what needs to be repaired?   5hrug Thanks Joe

Sorry to read of your mechanical issues Joe.  I have no idea what needs to be repaired, other than your steering issue.   ???  I'm confident some one will be along who may be able to help.  Good Luck.

My guess would be something in the gear box attached to the steering wheel. If it was at the motor you would probably be able to turn the motor by hand.

Do you have hydraulic or cable steering?  It sounds like you have cable and if so most likely a gear in the steering box behind the helm is broken.  The last I checked on them they did not rebuild or sell parts for them.  Sounds like it is time to buy a new one.  You can disconnect the motor end of the cable and see if the motor turns or not as well.

Cable- Did some research and look like that its. It looks like the 'rotary helm' needs to be replaced. thanks
