Friday flukin.... Raritan Bay....5-29
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:27:22 PM »
Woke up, called in sick and headed out, as the downpour started! Plan was to fish shallow and use some light gear. A little change after last weeks Gambler trip in 400+ feet and 24 oz sinkers!!!
Worked from Conaskonk Pt. to Belford and back all morning. Fished in tight to the beach, working the Belford, Monmouth Cove and Lenztze's outlets hard. Deadsticked a killie on a white floating jighead while working a 1 oz white Spro, tipped with pork rind. Never deeper than 15 feet, at times as shallow as 3 feet.
Tons of action, no keeps. Totaled 18 fluke, 3 blues and COUNTLESS birds. Every single fluke between 16 and 17". Caught pretty consistent, even through the slack. Working the bucktail out catching the deadstick by a mile!
Question for the flukers: I've snagged plenty of fluke through the years. Today I had 5 that were through the side. Felt them bump the jig, miss, then hit a second time. As I set the hook, they were foul hooked. Playing with it?? I dont know???
Kept 2 demons, 1 for the detailer at work (truck should look nice this week!) and 1 for Mags!

pics - foul hooked, flat after the storms, demon on the bucktail, Maggie waiting for a bluefish dinner!!!

You had action & that's all the matters. Nice job.

Here's my theory as to why you snag a lot of fluke while bucktail. I think that has the fluke sees the bucktail bouncing along imitating a crab, shrimp whatever, it pounces on it with it's body to stun it before it eats it. This is what we as the fisherman feels as a 'bite'. After we feel the 'bite', we the fisherman 'set the hook' thinking the fluke has eaten the bucktail but in reality it is lying atop of it. thus when we set the hook, the hook catches the fish in it's flank.
