Had Bluefish Steve, Ron, Ryan H, and Dave B aboard for a mixed bag trip. I told the guys to be prepared to fish for fluke inside and outside, and to bass fish.
Got some good intel that there were fluke in the river, and that the bass bite was OFF with the swell so we started right there in the river. Broke out the light stuff, with jigheads and bucktails tipped with gulp and live killies. Started W of 35, had immediate action with mixed size fish at the top of the tide. After 2 drifts we had a quick 4 keepers in the box up to 20" - then proceeded to pick away as the tide slowed. A move to the inlet and surrounding area produced more life as we caught the end of the tide there, and put another couple of keepers in the box. Lots of shorts, many fish in the 17.5" to just under 18" range
As the outgoing started roaring, things shut off, so we headed outside, ran N, and put the spoons and stretch plugs in. Lots of great readings, some bunker scattered top to bottom, but no fish in 2 hours.
Came back inside a little after 1, and caught the end of the tide back where we started. Added another couple of keepers plus a bunch more shorts as the outgoing crapped out and the sun finally peaked out.
Wound up doing pretty good, had around 50 fluke, and 9 nice keepers (all 18-21"). The guys all went home with a nice little sack of fillets - good first fluke trip of the year!!
