It is game time in the Garden State. The time of year when we can expect anything from a record bass to an 8ft Thresher shark in the Raritan Bay. Schools of bunker, herring, spearing and smaller baitfish are attracting just that. Ocean temperatures are just about right for any species to make an appearance.
Captain Ron’s Fisherman had more shorts than keepers this weekend, but most anglers went home with a few filets for the dinner table and happy to play catch and release with plenty of action. You can still catch Captain Ron in search of monster bass during the week so get out there.
Captain Carmine aboard the Island Girl III worked the outside of the hook with the rest of the fluke fleet and landed fish up to 22 inches. The Island Girl and crew ended the day maxed out on fluke and plenty of fish and chips for all.
Captain Joe G aboard the Sykk Physh has been making all the right moves and continues to spoil his charters with some of the best bass action on the east coast. Captain Joe G is taking out charters in the cover of darkness and landing some of the biggest trophy bass I have seen all season. Captain Joe T aboard Tuna Tales needed to battle bigger fish and headed off shore for warmer waters. Tuna Tales went eight for eight with some big blue sharks who patrolled their chum slick all day and handed out a few sore arms. Captain Joe and crew battled and released all fish to fight another day. Tuna Tales is just getting warmed up and will be targeting big Makos in the coming weeks.

Proactive IGFA Virginia, USA Representative Dr. Julie Ball took time on March 22, to wet a line off her hometown of Virginia Beach landing a tautog (Tautoga onitis). Dr. Ball, guided by Skip Feller, used a crab on 16 lb test line to attract the fish that weighed in at 14 lb 13 oz. She may replace the IGFA women’s line class record for the species, which is currently 13 lb 11 oz, caught off Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY in 1993
