sharks
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:09:04 PM »
hey guys, got a couple of questions about shark fishing.  i have a 19 foot glassmaster, with a 90hp mer on it.  how far out do you have to go to start catching sharks.  are we talking 2-3 miles, or a lot further out??? im just wonderin if my boat will be capable of going out far enough to shark fish.

We catch sharks off the beach all summer.  If people only knew what was swimming out there they would never go in the water again.

NJ Angler did a sharking show just off of Barnegat Inlet...maybe within a mile or 2 and had plenty of sharks.  They caught a really nice thresher.  So it is certainly possible.  Give it a try.  Of course, only go out as far as you are comfortable and capable of going and give it a shot.

Like Paul said, they get sharks in the surf all summer.

Good Luck!

Be carefull, going far offshore requires many different saftey devices and skills. Its a different ballgame. You may be better off doing a charter if you want to go offshore.

Right on Capt Rich. Make sure you have experienced people on the boat and the proper equipment.

For threshers, find the bunker pods and you just may find a thresher hanging around. We have hooked up with threshers while fluke fishing. Didn't land any, but hooked up with them just the same.

For mako, mud hole works fine. May be a bit too far for a 19'er. Keep a GOOD eye out for the weather. It can be nice when you go out, but it does not take long for the ocean to change and get real mean.

Good luck on your venture.  t^

You can get into a lot of sharks within 5 miles off the beach. But alot of thresher sharks no more than a mile or two off. If you have never done it, and you come accross a thresher, just be very careful, their tail will knock you out. Even when you think they are out of reach.  chrz
