06/17 Misty Morn PM Trip
« on: June 17, 2009, 10:31:33 PM »
Took a 1/2 day from work & jumped aboard the Misty Morn's magic hour trip. By the time the boat pulled out of the slip at 5 PM the boat was 85% full. Conditions were less than ideal with a brisk easterly wind at 15-20 against the outgoing tide. Fished anywhere & everywhere from the NJ side of the the Triangle, Keyport Flats and a few spots mid bay. A lot of shorts (& I mean short as in 8-10"s), especially early. I mainly stuck with my Spro & teaser rig. Fish were not aggressive tonight. I think I had a total of 6 bites on this rig all night. I took 2 17" shorts, missed 3 soft bites and dropped a fish that pulled some drag. I ended up catching another short late dragging bait. Jason was able to cull 1 keeper out of the 3 fluke he caught. There was only 1 other keeper taken. Unfortunately Jason's wasn't the pool winner tonight. The person who won the pool also took a keeper (19"s) fluke while the boat was till in the slip before we left. Jason & I usually get to the boat early and fish from the back of the boat. Most times we catch a few. I've taken fluke up to #5 here and have seen #7s come up.

A few unusual catches tonight; a tool belt, an umbrella rig and a 17" blackfish (released) that was taken on a squid strip/spearing combo (yes, the hook was in the mouth).

Nice report Skolmann.

My nephew once caught a steering wheel in the Raritan. Amazing what you may bring up.  TT^

So the pool winner was caught while still at the dock in the slip?  Before the first horn and fares paid?  Shadey I say 5hrug

whs  It doesn't seem fair to all the customers if a fish you catch before the scheduled start time counts towards the pool. nosmly

No that fish wasn't allowed to be in the pool. Although it was bigger than the only 2 keepers caught on the boat.

The person who caught the fluke while the boat was still in the slip also caught 1 of the 2 keepers on the boat. His boat caught keeper was bigger than Jason's boat caught.

Hey Skolmann, I was in the flats too and saw you guys milling around. I did pretty good.  I was surprised how full the misty morn was.

Yea, I was kinda shocked to see a nearly full boat for a Wednesday night. Most of the fares were from the Middletown North high school wrestling team. Capt. Bob's son Matt was among them. Good to see him again after doing some black drum fishing with him in Cape May not too long ago.
