Absolutely rent him his own pole.  It is all part of the experience.  Plus bring along the Bonine for sea sickness as well.  Check with your Dr. first to make sure though.

get him his own pole and also any fish you get on yours let him reel them in,you have to keep them occupied at that age or they get bored, when I have young kids out most always turn my pole over to let them bring it in,have a good day fishing with your son and a early happy fathers day to you t^     Kez

As others have said, let him have his own pole and turn your's over when you get a fish on. Good luck and keep it fun for the youngster. t^

Rent him his own pole so he feels special.  Make sure you put him in the pool also.  I have seen many youngsters win the pool with a boat rod.  The best was on the Gambler when a 13 year old girl caught a 30 pound Cod fish on a rental and won the big pool.

Of course rent him a rod.  My daughter was catching fluke when she was four years old.  By eight she was casting well, able to work lures and netting my fish.  Now at twelve, puberty is rearing its ugly head, and her interest in fishing is wavering, but I digress.

You will be surprised what kids can do if you make it fun for them.

I will just agree with getting him his own pole.  He may surprise you and out fish you and many others.  I have been taking my son fishing since last summer when he turned 2.  He has the concept down, just not the attention span.

Either way, you will both have fun and make everlasting memories and stories.

Good Luck!

The day is a success already.
Rent him his own,let him reel them in and take all the pictures your camera can take.Be patient.
I  used to give the kids a couple of bucks to spend in the Deli on the way to the marina  and they still talk about the Jolly Ranchers, Gum, Candy and the fish.
Twenty years later we still fish together when we can.
Look forward to your post. chrz

Best tip I could give you is to have something to keep him occupied. For my son,a five gallon pale with a pint of live killies always does it,and let him do what he wants with them (feed gulls, smash em or whatever). Also overdress you can always take stuff off.As for the rod, if you have the cash go pick him up his own new setup, as I think the rental will be a bit heavy in his hand all day, besides if everything goes well he'll need it again...Keep your patiences and have a great time..
