Had Bill Pisarra, Pete Pellack, Greg Breaux and his buddy Dan aboard for today's FTYP trip.
Ran north, and worked the stretch from Asbury up to Sea Bright. Early on we had a real confused sea, with current opposing the brisk NNW wind. The first drift on some mussel beds was fruitless, as we had some current coming out of the N with the NNW wind - no fish.
Went further up, got into a serious wind against tide on some rough spots. Managed to very slowly pick away at short fluke, a nice keeper by Pete @ 21"/3 lb. 14 oz., and a couple of real small seabass. Working this area again, and a few other spots around it, were slow - we went fishless for the next 45 or so minutes. So, we ran in on the beach, just to change the pace, got a couple of shorts, but again that was it.
We then made a move to where we had the 21 keepers last Monday in real shallow water, and had our "best" pick of the day going there in 12-20' of water, where we had a couple of shorts a drift, and a few more keepers. At this point the current from the N was running pretty hard, and the wind was coming more N, so it got fast.
We made a few more drops in 45-55' of water, and with that N current and now NNE wind @ 10-15 we were drifting at 2 kts + even with the drift sock in the water Finished up in tight fishing LB, Elberon, and Deal, and had a few more shorts but even in there, 8-10 oz. was "scraping" real bad with the screaming current and NNE breeze.
Finished the day with just 30 or so fluke in the boat, and a few seabass; just 6 went in the box to 21" Real slow day, we had a little action, but at best, it was an incredibly slow pick of fluke. Full moon on the wane should get these fish biting again in the next few days.
