Hey, newb question.
Been fishing from a bass boat for a couple of years. Before that in the ocean for about 20 years. There is way too much water I cannot access with a boat, that I want to fish!
I want a yak, but... I do not want to spend $1,200 to see if I like it. Looking @ Dick's & S.A. they have a couple of fishing yaks that look to be geared towards the beginner. I am currently looking @ the Pelican Castaway 116DLX. I don't mind so much putting out $500 to conquer the learning curve. If I do in fact want to upgrade after that so be it, I will. My question is, does anyone have any knowledge of, or experience with this boat or one like it?

Welcome Aboard BND,

All I can say is try it before you buy it.  There are very qualified outfitters around that will let you try different makers of boats.  Barrell who is on here is a good start and Jersey Paddler is a second.

I took my time and am very pleased with the Hobie Quest I finally purchased.

I am sure others will chime in soon be patient and I am sure the guys will steer you in the right direction.

Hi BND & welcome to a great site!
Because it's 11' 6" long & 30" wide the Castaway is not gonna be the fastest of 'yaks to paddle... I was recently in a WS Tarpon 120 (12' long & 30" wide & I thought it was difficult...) Unfortunately I have never paddled a Castaway so can't offer any 1st hand knowledge.
As a beginner, any 'yak that gets you out on the water is a good deal - out on the water & fishing even better! I have to agree with Paul though - drop yer azz in a couple & paddle then or pedal them to see what out there.

Just picked this up. It's a Hobie Outback with the mirage drive( foot pedals ).Been looking at them for a while. they're pricey but ..... Caught my first keeper fluke in it today !!!    ( sorry no pics).
