National Geographic Monday Giant Travally
« on: July 16, 2009, 12:41:20 AM »
This is what I was after out in Hawaii.  The show should air this coming Monday.  Out there they call it Whipping.  Using plugs and spinning gear.  Pretty cool aught to be interesting.

Cool!  I have seen some video of Ulua fishing from Hawaii from another forum.  Pretty neat!

In the promos they are talking about some really big Ulua like over 200 pounds...It is amazing how big they can get.

I am not up on the Hawaiian fish names.  What is the difference between whipping and Ulua??  They are both GT, right?  Just different sizes, like snappers, cocktails, and gator blues?

Whipping is the way to catch GT.  It is just like plugging our here.  Usually done on light poles compared to their 13 -14' conventional outfits.  And we thought 12'ers were long.  Those poles are like telephone poles.  It is nothing to see 9/0 Newell's on them.

They are just stare ting to switch over to braid and most still use mono.

Happy Catching

Cool, thanks for the info.

It is definitely a unique, specialized way of surf fishing.  The video I saw, they had to climb down a cliff and out onto the rock jetties where they were constantly getting hit by waves.  They have drilled into the rocks and have these rod holders they put in the holes.  Certainly challenging just to get out fishing, then forget it when they hook into one of the big ones!

Yeah, and those rocks are not smooth either.  It is all volcanic rocks with jagged points everywhere.  If you look at the popular areas that fisherman gather you will see holes drilled all over the place.  What they do is drill a hole and insert a pvc pipe and cement it into place.  There might be up to 10 holes drilled and not only holes for the rods but they have hold down ropes anchored as well so they do not loose their rigs.

They have this thing down to a science.  Plus they have large bells to let them know that they have a bight on.  That is inhumanity gone whild as some of the bells are huge.  They are out there all night and usually fall asleep these bells will wake the dead not only someone from a deep sleep.

It's neat to see and learn how people fish in different places.

Well, saw the show and was not to impressed about the GT portion.  I witnessed it first hand from the shoreline and it really is something to watch how they pull those huge fish up the cliffs.  If I can find a few vid's I will post them up pretty cool.

I found the home videos of Ulua fishing that I have seen on Youtube.  These are links to the main pages.  There are a few videos to watch(**Caution Some of the Videos Contain Language Not Suitable for Children)!
