Jason and I were along with John (the president of the Bergen Saltwater Anglers Club) fished aboard Capt Allen's Reel Class. What was to have been a FTYP trip was changed to FTYP River trip due to less than favorable conditions on the outside.
First part of the day was spent drifting the main river channel and adjacent flats from just west of Clark's east towards the Rt 35 bridge. The outgoing tide coupled with the south wind made for a quick but fishable drift. Jason & Capt Allen both started off with a 3/8 ounce jighead tipped with a 4" chartreuse GULP swimming minnow. I started off using a 1 ounce white Spro with a dropper hook above both tipped with a 4" chartreuse GULP swimming minnow. John opted to drag killies. I caught a few shorts pretty fast then the bite on my set-up died and the fluke were all over the light jigheads. I switched to that for a while and picked a few. John was also able to pick some as well. All the fish we caught at this time were between 12-17"s.
Made the move to the extreme northern end of Barnegat Bay. Not much doing at first. A few missed bites. But eventually the fluke chewed some. John put the first fish of the day in the box with a nice 19"er. Jason soon followed that up with a fluke slightly bigger in addition to a decent amount of shorts. I switched back to my Spro/teaser set-up and was rewarded with a nice 20"er. The tide died out here so we went back to the river to catch the incoming. Fished the same stretch of river where I was able to box another pair of keepers to 21"s. Moved over to the Glimmer Glass creek where we didn't get much. Ended the day just west of the Rt 35 bridge where I put another 19+" er in the box.
Total for the day was @ 50 fluke with 6 of them keepers from 19-21"s.
