IBSP 8-17-09
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:00:37 AM »
Headed out to the sand today for some evening casts in the surf.  A decent amount of other buggies were out pegging the waves for a Monday.  The Missus and I got set up around 8 near A-15.  It was a perfect night to spend on the beach.  Nice air and water temps, no bugs after a little spritz, calm waves, and my lady.  ;)  Wind was coming out of the SSW with clear skies.  I took advantage of the calm waves and walked a pole out pretty damn far and threw some nice bunker chunks out to entice some big'uns.  Got a little dogfish/sand shark (Can't tell the difference) after a few minutes.  Re-baited and sent another fat set of chunks WAY out there.  8:30 rolled around and BANG! I hooked into something with some fight to her.  Same fish.....Different size.  Didn't have a ruler handy, but I did have the camera!  It was getting quite dark by then, so I was leery about going too far out to cast.  A little more time passed and I set the hook on a smooth skate and had Wifey pull the fat little bastard in.  Sent another bait out and must have fed a few hungry crabs.
All in all another great night on IBSP.  t^ There was also a good amount of glowing things in the wash and rolling up on the sand.  Bio-luminescence of some sort, I guess? ???

Nice job!  Some decent action from the surf.

I think those could be either jellyfish or most likely microscopic algae called dinoflagellates.  Same type of thing that causes red tides only different species/family.

I put one on the flashlight and it almost looked like a sand crab but much smaller.  There were a good number of them.

Interesting!!

Kind of creepy and peaceful all at the same time when you are out there alone, standing in the water up to your knees and the water starts glowing.  Sounds like something out of a Stephen King Novel ;D.

nice catch  t^ im pretty sure dogfish have teeth that arent sharp, like our molars, and sandsharks have sharp teeth. so next time stick you finger in its mouth and if you get your finger back its a dogfish, if not its a sandshark. lol

True that!  Hopefully the little lady will let me out again tonight if the weather holds up.  Haven't seen a report yet though.
