Life After Bill? ?
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:28:38 PM »
With hurricane Bill churning offshore it looks like a pretty heavy swell coming for the weekend.. We'll remain tied to the docks this weekend, as  I suspect will many others. So lets have some good fishtalk..   As my saltwater experience is somewhat limited, maybe some of the njwsf seasoned salts would be generous enough to share their knowledge  concerning how these storms effect fishing after their passing...  I know the heave will likely stir up the bottom inshore.. How long before things begin to settle ???  How is water temp effected  ???  How do various fishes  react/reposition after storms  ???  What effects can it have on offshore/midshore pelagic fisheries  ??? What about the Surf  ??? What are potential benefits of such events  ???   With the wealth of knowledge posessed by the members of this board, I'm sure the answers will be of great value to us all  chrz

Although there much more knowledgeable people that me here I would think that things would be back to where they were after a couple of days given the time of year.

If it was a transition time, say Sept or Oct a big blow would change things but the avg water temp shouldn't change much so I think it'll just fall back into a late August pattern...

Depending on how Bill will end up, if it comes up and stays a Cat 3 the oceans will be churned up pretty good especially inshore.  You might experience some upwelling (which is the colder water can be brought to the top) but if an inversion occurs which is the cold and the warm do a flip flop. If this happens he water will take longer to get back to normal more closer to a week.

The churning up of the bottom will occur so look for a cloudy water with loads of debris like grasses, sand and smashed up shells.

The key here is the smashed up shells.  Bait of choice for a while will be clams for the beach guys as well as those that stay inshore more.  The beaches will be taking a beating so if you venture out make sure your not caught off guard and stranded on IBSP during a high tide out there.

The rough seas on the other hand will make for some good striper fishing if you dare to get out and try your luck off the beaches.

All in all I would guess we can look for questionable conditions for close to a week with this one.

The back bays should fair okay as they are not battered like the ocean side so only a couple of days and everything should be good to go again and back to normal.

This would be a good time to do some mid summer maintenance on the boats and get ready for the Fall run, I hope things are good this year.

Happy Catching

Very Good Question!
Could this mean that Ocean Fluke fishing may be over before the season ends?
