Topwater Bonito and Albies?
« on: September 12, 2009, 08:32:10 PM »
I'm planning to get out for some bonito and fat alberts this Tuesday.  I'm going to be strictly chucking lures. ;D

All of the bones and albies I've caught have been on metals, bucktails or leadhead plastics.  I've never caught one on a topwater plug, and I'd like to try on Tuesday.

Have any of you ever caught them on topwater plugs?  If so, what plugs would you recommend for them?  Is the topwater thing a viable way to catch them, or would I be wasting my time?

Thanks,
Bob

Well, based on the overwhelming amount of responses to this topic ::), I'd say I have the answer to my question.

But, I'm going to pack a few spooks and poppers anyway.  Couldn't hurt to try!  ;)

I have never targeted them Buck...but when I happened upon them in the Inlet and once in the surf, I threw hopkins at them.  I thought they were blues, but was happily surprised.

I am sure they will hit topwater plugs.  Especially when they are smashing bait pods.  They would probably hit anything...here's a video I saw of them on the surf.  It looks like they are smashing fish on the surface so, from an unexperienced bonito/albie fisherman, I would say it is worth the try.
