Short/Great Crabbing Report 9/26
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:25:53 PM »
Worked to 3:30 today.  Took a ride to check on the boat.  On my way down I got the itch and I couldn't resist. I stopped at the food store, picked up some chicken backs and off to the boat.  Went up the Navasink to a previous productive spot with the start of the outgoing tide.  My first lift of my first hand like was a tripple header.  Finished with a few tripples and some double headers.

End result was 2 dozen jumbo's, largest going 6 1/2" in only a short hour of crabbing.  I wish I had longer cause it could have been a super banner day.. Since I was solo, and the water was crystal clear and I could see bottom at 8', the crabs also saw the net, so needless to say, I lost as many as I landed due to them letting go.

So when do the crabs STOP biting? or when is the season over?

So when do the crabs STOP biting? or when is the season over?

When the Bay temps drop below 52 degrees or so, give or take, they dig in the mud and stop feeding.  Season never closes for recreational trap or handline.  There is a closed season for pots and trot lines.  When they dig down into the mud, they will use a crab dredge to dig them out and catch them.

they eat like crazy this time of year preparing for hibernation, so this is when they are at the best. It is their last chance to fill up with food, so they are chomping on everything.
