Fish Monger Lake Ontario Tribs(Ny) Grand Slam 10/16-10/18
« on: October 18, 2009, 08:45:18 PM »
Well with all the bad weather and canceled trips we headed up to all our favorite small tribs that run off Ontario... Picked up our stashed brown eggs(NY GOLD) from a friend and we were read to go. Myself, Capt Wayno, Stellios, and Uncle Paulie(U.P.) rounded out da crew!!!

Day 1

Tied Our eggs sacs and was ready to fish... Water was very low so hardly any up any of the creeks but the estuaries were all loaded with fish waiting for water... Had Great fishing our first day in the am... Everyone caught alot of fish, Stelly and U.P. got there personal best Trouts and well over 10lbs!!! It was a nice mix of Domestic Bows and Steelhead with a few brown trout, King Salmon and Cohos Mixed in...

When the bite slowed it was off to another trib and the lock and load began again with bows and chromers to 10lbs...Got Lunch and headed back to the first spot for the evening bite which was a wild as the am!!! Stelly got his first coho... i got a nice bow... wayne an acrobatic silver chromer and up landed a nice one... i Personally caught over 30 fish and we Prob had around 75 total... Seen a guy land a beauty around 15lbs which i got a nice pic of!

Day 2

Same routine as day one... tons of bites... Bunch of Nice male hook jaws for all... loads of fun...Stelly had a 12lber,10lber and a coho within a hour! afternoon was slow but in the evening fresh fish came bustin in like crazy had silvers testing our 6lb test to the limit!

Day 3

We only fished the morning...had a good bite going on... everyone caught a bunch of fish mixed in size... couple of real fresh ones... Caught a Bunch and was on our way home!!!

All fish were caught on Noodle rods with 6lb test to swivel and flouro leader size 12 hook under a float with fresh brown trout eggs sacs.

Weather was great up there! We fished by ourselves almost the whole trip only seeing a handful of other anglers! We easily caught OVER 150 FISH + We released almost all just keeping a few (only gut hooked ones) for Paulies smoker! What a great trip with good friends!!! I have a Ton of great pic which i will post!

They are only one good rain from mayhem up there with the big browns swimming in the lake just waiting... steelhead and rainbows already anywhere that has any water with more coming daily!

Will be up one more time before blackfish starts!!!

Here are some of the pics!!!

Domestic Bows and Steelhead?  What is a domestic rainbow?  I understand Steelhead, especially from the pics, looks like your fishing at the mouth in some of the pics.  You should be catching some fresh crome fish, but older steelhead who have been in the river for some time tend to show all the bright colors of a rainbow.  In fact the two are basically identical and have the same genus and species scientific names.  I always hear guys talking about catching domestic rainbows but can never give a realistic explanation on what defines them from steelhead.  I guess you can call them domestic if they never spent time in the lake.  Any explainations would be great.  I saw a guy catch a nice crome steelhead in NY and call it a domestic rainbow, he was certain it didn't come from the lake.  I don't get it....  how can small tribs hold 10 plus pound rainbows year round if they would be considered domestic.  If these rainbows are being caught year round I might understand, but there being caught in the fall through early spring when they head back to the lake.

I just by what the locals say... Out west they have rainbows that they call domestioc from stocking years ago at the 10-12 in size not fingerlinks like steelhead. Once they hit a ceratin age the cant turn into a steelhead (again characteristics silver / spawning traits)

So those fish although technically the same species take on different characteristics...

It has nothing to do with staying in the stream... these fish run from the lake every year as well.

they dont turn sivler like a steelhead (even in the lake).. they retain reg lake like rainbow characteristics like in nj lakes...

The fish we are catching havent even made it to the river yet...

They also spawn in the early fall while most steelhead enter the river but dont until spring

very very confusing and i am not a scientist, but is has something to do with photogentics and fish size stocking... what has been imprinted in their brain

Once steelhead go into spawn mode they all kind of cool colors making them hard to tell apart, but in the lake they are silver.

Just like different types of steelhead and brown types by where the come fish from...same fish diffrent traits(colors sizes spawning patterens) etc from a German brown and other types... Skamiania steelhead(Summer run)vs other types.

very confusing indeed, I was under the impression that when in the lakes the silvery color is for protection.  Which is apparent in the fresh steelhead and even browns that enter the river.  So if they are stocked as fingerlings at a smaller size they can turn out to resemble steelhead.  If they are larger when stocked, they will be considered domestic and will not form the protective crome color in the lakes. Regardless of which one it is, later in the season or even now since there has been plenty of water in the river steelhead lose the protective chrome color the longer they are in the rivers/tribs.  When water levels flucuate, steelhead not able to get up stream will go back into the lake until the stream is up.  I have caught steelhead at the mouth with plenty of color on spoons that were obvious dropbacks.  I'm going to stick with your post on the reason, it makes some sense to me.  This topic always comes up as a debate for my friends every year, I might write to ny fish and game and get an answer from them as well.  Other than that, nice post and pics... I will be in erie next month for 3 days of steelhead....  can't wait!

Ny state does not recognize any of these as a different species... And it is very very confusing... but they are all fun to catch!

Good luck in erie great fishery there from what i hear!!!

From what the locals say... its a time of year thing they will catch these "rainbows" for over 1 month in the lake" while just about all steelhead are sivler then...

We actually see them spawn at or before the time when browns do... very early fall...

we also see "steelhead" spawing in the spring and they usaully start enter in dec when the "rainbows" are actually leaving...

Size also varies with the rainbows being alot smaller per avg

Skamania steelhead spawn in the early fall and enter the rivers at super low water summer time... they are all super long skinny and spookish.. we caught a bunch in sept /oct 1 year... 4lb test t shirt and low gin clear water

i find it all real interesting

You ever get any of those rainbows/ steelhead with the fantails in  erie...

We see these quite often in the area we fish...Strange looking!
