Bass, Blues and Blue Fin on Thanksgiving

Headed out on the Turkey day ritual fishing with Mike, Matt and Jim........Bay was like glass and a light fog. Rounded the hook into some swells but nothing major.

Checked out between the channels and nothing happening. Moved off shore into 70-80 ft of water and started picking at Jumbo Blues to 16 lbs and a few bass.

In a matter of seconds Schoolie Blue Fin were busting around the boat, Mike hooked one on an AVA 27 plain........it only took a few seconds and the reel was spooled.......had nothing on the boat heavy enough for the job. Played with the Blues and Bass while watching the Blue Fin and two pods of Dolphin feeding in the area....great day indeed.

Bite died down and we moved inshore to around 40-35 feet of water found Bass stacked from the bottom up 20 feet.

In short order we had 12 in the box up to 33" (including Bonous Fish), released another 25 or so, along with  several more Jumbo Blues.

Tons of laughs, great fishing and a wonderful display by nature. Does not get any better than that.

Headed back in, cleaned the fish and boat, tosted the day and then went for Turkey Dinner. Day was a 10 out of 10.

Guess they had the right equiptment wonder if they had a HMS permit ?

Hey a few years ago a guy fishing the surf off of seaside park hooked and landed a bluefin.
Whats the call on that ,can he keep the fish or does he have to release it
the HMS permit requires a boat to qualify
Just wondering

I found this in the Q&A section on the NMFS Permit site. This is a cut and paste directly from the site.

Q: Do I need a recreational permit to fish for or land tunas, sharks, swordfish, and/or bilfish?
A: Yes, vessel owners/operators who recreationally fish for or retain regulated Atlantic tunas (bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, albacore, and skipjack), sharks, swordfish, and billfish in Atlantic Federal waters, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, must obtain an HMS Angling category permit or a HMS Charter/Headboat permit. However, General category vessels may fish recreationally for HMS so long as they are participating in a registered recreational HMS tournament and fishing under tournament rules. Vessels fishing exclusively in state waters are required to obtain the HMS Angling permit if they wish to keep their regulated tunas (bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye, skipjack, and albacore). Vessel owners/operators should check their state regulations regarding the retention of sharks, swordfish, and/or billfish in state waters.

Q: May I fish for Atlantic tunas without a vessel (e.g., from an oil rig or from shore)?
A: No, only permitted vessels may fish for Atlantic bluefin, bigeye, albacore, yellowfin, and skipjack tunas in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. If one of these species is caught incidentally during fishing activities from shore or from an oil rig, it must be released immediately.

Joe I beleive the NMFS said he could keep it because it was likely to die even if he could get it back in  the water. I think Grumpy's had a write up on that one.
at least they used some common sense on that call.

I seem to have read that  somewhere also. As you said, common sense prevailed on that one.
