That's true. Many of these guys camp out on these cliffs all weekend. The lines you see are mostly lines to tether the poles so they don't go over the side. It may look like the poles are in cracks in the rock but in fact they are holes drilled into the lava rock and PVC pipe resined into place to be used as rod holders.
You can walk out onto these areas and see hundreds of these holes all over the place. They use battery operated hammer drills. Most of the lint they throw averages around 80# test. Poles are in the range of 13 to 15' long. Pretty impressive.
