Black Sea Bass 2010 Total Allowable Catch Increased
« on: February 09, 2010, 01:26:10 PM »
NOAA Fisheries Service's Northeast Regional Administrator reviewed the
Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's request for temporary
emergency rulemaking to implement an increase in the 2010 black sea bass
quota.

Through this action we will help prevent significant direct economic
loss for fishery participants and associated industries that would be
subject to lower commercial and recreational harvest levels. An
additional amount of black sea bass landings will also be able to be set
aside for research activities.

Through this temporary emergency rule, NOAA increases the 2010 black sea
bass
total allowable catch from 2.71 million lb to 4.5 million lb. After
deducting discards, the total allowable landings will increase from 2.3
million lb  to 3.7 million lb.

Thanks for the info CaptTB.

It is funny though that they act like they are the heros here. That they did this just for us.  nosmly

They say they changed the quota because they did not want the economic impact a very restrictive season would cause. Cut me a freaking break, they did it because that is the way the system IS SUPPOSED TO WORK and not by any of their doings.  nosmly The sea bass were shown not to be overfished and overfishing was not ocurring. That was shown to them before and they insisted on keeping the very restrictive season anyway.

They finally saw the light somehow. Possibly because of the RFA lawsuit? I'm thinking, yes.  slt chrz

The powers to be in any situation will always make it look like they are the "heros". It's called politics. Glad we have good "lobbists"

Actually no. The reason was because in December the RFA and United Boatmen (yes, we were the only ones to speak) were able to get the Council to send the quota recommendation back to the SSC to be reconsidered. In early January the SSC, faced with the Monitoring Committee information they did not have initially and in light of the overwhelming argument made by RFA and UB, combined with the recent trawl surveys that supported the Stock Assessment data (that Sea Bass were not overfished and that the stock was robust) changed their recommendation from a TAL of 2.3 million pounds to a TAL of 3.7 million pounds.

Still not where it should be but a dam site better than it was.

And to all those that have posted and sent e-mails, you are most very welcome. All involved put a butt load of work into this, and it has finally paid some dividends.

Now if I could just do something that would actually help my brother's business  ::)

All this crap and he is still out of business and his boat for sale. _:"
