Even though this was our first trip of the season, I took it seriously and we had all of our ducks in a row. Got up way too early and trailer my rig to Great Kills and dumped her in in the dark. Ran around for 2 hours looking for the elusive menhaden-----very scarce. Threw the net on the more promising readings and zip-o. No popping on the top water either. Went out and tooled around with some plugs, but came back pretty wet and beat up. Nice day but windy. Went looking for bunker again to no avail. In fact, I saw only one boat bring in a small catch of bunker all day. None of the commercial guys were out, so it is either too early or they are in J-Bay again this year. Threw the snagging hook for awhile and we had no luck. But it was a great first trip-----safe and no difficulties whatsoever. All of my maintenance/repairs over the winter worked out 100%, and my oldest boy is getting much better "on the rudder" which makes the bait gathering more efficient.
I am heading to FL for some fishing next week and will throw a post out.
