My Garmin GPS Map 545s has the option to interpret suspended targets and have them appear as fish symbols. I often see photos of other Captains sonar and never see the fish symbols but do see their sonar readings as color waves. Is there an advantage to NOT using the fish symbols? Which is better?

The Fish ID function is there to help a beginner know that a mark is actually a fish or not, however it ironically will miss alot of fish that it doesn't recognize or mark things that aren't fish as fish. The Fish ID function is notorious for turning jellyfish into real fish on the monitor. It's best to turn it off and learn to recognize the actual markings on your screen.
