Got a call on Friday from Chief PO Steve Yandergrift, that he and two other Chiefs wanted to go fishing On Sunday, that they were abaod the USS Iwo Jima that was docked at NWS Earle. Made arangements with the Chief to pick them up at the main gate at 0600 on Sun.
Weather was looking bad for Sunday as the day was to where on but I as determined to get the Chiefs out fishing. Got up early on Sunday and ran to get the bait and ice and them to Earle to make the pickup. Was met by Steve Master Chief Tom Crutfield and Chief PO Perry Gaffney, great guys. Made the trip[ to the boat stopping to pick up snacks for the guys. Boat was laoded and we were underway at 0650. Day started out great and I ean outside as the water Temp shot up to 75 in the bay and shut down the bite.
Arrived on my spot found some marks and began the slick going, had an early run off but no hook up, boated a couple skates and Dogs. Pod of Bunkers came by but nothing on them. At the change i ran into the bay, just as the wind licked into high gear. Greated with a stiff 25-30 WSW wind against the incoming tide. Found birds working, tried jigging and drifting no luck. Anchored up and tried to Chunk them in, had wind against chunks and lines going all over, took some green water over the bow while on the hook. Deceided to pull the hook and head in closer to shore. No dice wind still hawking 3 knott drift. Finally packed it it and headed for the barn. Dropped the guys off at Moby's so they could have a Beer and some lunch.
Gased the boat, put her away and washed her, picked up the Guys just as they finished. Gave them a ride back to the base. The Chiefs presented me witha Chiefs Assoc Coin, beautiful. Even though no fish, a great days with some outstanding protectors of our Freedom.
