Rod building bench
« on: May 13, 2007, 08:31:01 PM »
Ok I'm moving into a new house in a few weeks and I gained an entire garage for myself....  Not only do I love fishing but hunting and woodworking so I have to intertwine one garage space to fit the needs of three intense hobbies...  Anyone have any pics of their rod building benches or setups, please post them so I can get some design ideas!!!  Once I figure out my set up I'm going to photograph the construction stages and hopefully spark some ideas with others!!!

Hi Dennis,

I am surprised no one posted anything yet.  If I get a chance I will pull my stuff out and take a number of photos.

I built all my stuff out of simple materials and old motor from a sewing machine With foot pedal.  The only thing I bought was the drying motor.

I mounted the motor on a 1x2 approx 7-8" off the table top and mounted that to a piece of wood 1x3x4 approx. with screws from the bottom.  I use C-clamps to clamp it to my work bench.  I than built another setup with a V-notch that is the same height as the motor shaft.  I lined the V-notch with felt to protect the blank.  Simple set up but very effective.

I built a lot of rods so I don't use any fancy bobbin holders,  The one I use is a bobbin holder one uses to tie flies with.  I can control the line better and let the motor fly when I get going.

I hope this helps.  We are remodeling the inside of our house right now so if I can dig out my stuff like I said i will photograph it for you.

Happy Catching

Paul

I just started building last march so I built my own hand turning set up out of wood and built my own tension device with some washers screws and springs.

My intentions were to finish my garage and make a set up but i'm a little delayed... Little League Fall and Youth Soccer got in the way!!!  Not that I'm complaining.
