Spheros Reel Question
« on: July 04, 2010, 01:32:44 PM »
My son recently purchased the Shimano Spheros 8000FB Reel. After each cast while the line is in the water the line goes very limp. Is there a way to keep the line more taught? The drag is tightened all the way. Thank you for your help.

What line do you have on it?  Mono, fluoro, braid?  What pound test?  What brand and make (i.e. Berkley Trilene XL)?

30 lb test mono. Not sure of the brand.

Sounds like you need a heavier weight on it.  Your sinker is moving and it is not a line problem.  Make sure the drag is set tight enough and if it is, it is the sinker being dragged either by a current or by the wind or a combination of both.

If you're talking about the line on the water, that's probably due to the thickness and memory of that 30 lb. mono.  If you move down to a more limp line in a lower pound test (i.e. Trilene XL in 17 or 20 lb.) you will probably notice less of this.   You should also see an improvement if you switch to braid in the same (30 lb.) test.

Yes I think you make a good point regarding the braided line. I got a Shimano Baitrunner reel recently and I have the same 30lb test as my son has on his reel but mine is braided. Big difference. Maybe I'll just get the braided line for him.
