YSA Independence Fluke Recap
« on: July 05, 2010, 08:39:35 PM »
Going for broke we managed a late start Saturday. Christine and I tried some spots in the reach that were producing on Friday, but for us the drifts produced shorts. Moved to the Triangle, but the NNW was causing a south drift again so that was tuff too. Cleaned up and ended the evening at the mayhem in Red Bank. The KABOOM vantage point from Grillo's slip was excellent and so were Delfini's rice balls.

Sunday I was planning on hittin it early so my wife and all my friends made themselves scarce. No worries that don't stop me. Got to the TC nobody there yet. Picked up some fish on a drift E towards the Bug Light but they all had stopped growing longer at 17-3/4". As the boats began to show I got outta there and worked up the reach red side to the 14 for more shorts, then the greenside a bit, same results. Pulled some fish from the Port Monmouth Hole then the Keansburg Hole (got spotted by Eddie who was nearby) and by then I was baked and with another BBQ on tap the Patron drinkers just added to the bakiness. Yep, bakiness.

With two stellar trips and no meat for the box, we cautiously shoved off this morning hosting none other than Grillo himself- slummin it on his old Grady. Figured there's no keepers in the bay (contrary to what I heard) so let's go outside. A crazy 2+kt drift thru the sticks convinced us to go in nearer to the beach- besides theres nudies to look at if there's no fish (scary lookin nudies- where do they get these people- and why do they insist on baring all?) Picked up more shorts, then a large drumfish was spotted nearby slowly swimming about 2ft down. Cool sight, we followed him stealthy-like for awhile but did not harass him. Lost the drift with the tide, moved out to the SH channel, more shorts. A HUGE pod of bunker moved thru; we casted metal to no avail. Drift picked up the other way. Moved back in and FINALLY boated a couple keepers. Got hotter if that was possible, moved away from everyone, set the hook and jumped in for a cooldown. Time for lunch - what - forgot the sandwiches? Nice Paul, good job. But wait, nice save, Grillo's practically buds with Dockmaster Jerry- let's go dock and dine at Windansea. Good entertainment there for sure, need dark glasses wit wifey there. Watched a couple boats go by, Tombo called from the Hook that he almost got his first keeper fluke on his scow, had some fish tacos and called it a day.

Long Weekend!!!!

Great weekend. I got tired just reading your report.  ;D You were busy. Lotsa shorts down my way also. Hard to put a catch together. But we will all keep trying.  t^

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
