coil?
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:04:20 PM »
Hello all
Sunday put the boat in the water after sitting for two weeks, Started up fine engine running a little rough, i thought maybe i just need to dump my fuel separators or something.Get out in the water pass the the no wake zone can't get above 2000 rpms nothing even when the throttle buried. I change to my spare portable tank thinking maybe fuel issue still nothing,Stayed running the whole time at about 700 rpm when it is always running about 1000 rpm. Fuel is two weeks old and ran a couple hours on that tank no issues.A buddy suggested maybe a coil went bad? Any other ideas going down tonight to check coils, 1980,140 V4 johnson   thanks TJ

Could be one of many things or a combination. carbs, floats, jets timing advance? How are  the plugs.  Start with the simple stuff and move on from there or better yet call Maritime Matt. He'll fix it right up for ya.  Good Luck

First give it a bill of health. Check all the vitals. Compression, spark, fuel. When were the carbs done last? Plugs? Correct ones in the motor? You already started trouble shooting it by changing the tank. While its running and your throttling up to plane, push the electric choke/ enrichener in. Does it run better? Worse or stall out? Take the air box off the front. There should be drain screws on the side of the carbs.
Take them out and drain them. Take the fuel line off the motor and pump some fuel int a clear glass jar. Nice and clear? better be. Is it firing on all cylinders? Lots of professional help right here. call 908-217-2345. Matt.
