GAS/OIL MIX
« on: August 11, 2010, 12:54:14 PM »
I need some help to make sure my oil mix is correct. I have a late 80's evinrude 225 outboard. with the oil pump disconnected. Gas is premixed.I am not sure what the right mix should be, and I have smoke at startup. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bill

I believe it's 50/1.  Smoke is good.  No smoke is bad.  Better to be rich then lean.

And a good call pre mixing.  This way you don't have to worry about the pump t^

Rod's right. 50-1 should last a long time.
Some run 40-1 or even 32-1 if you run sustained hi rpms a lot. Costs more in oil, might need to change the plugs a little more often, but these are cheap items compared to pistons, other powerhead internals, and labor. When we ran highly modified jet skis we'd always run a little extra oil and a lil rich on the carb jets to ward off sudden engine seizure.

Another thing to remember.  These 2 stokes live for WOT.  Babying these engines are not good for them and cause carbon build up.  When ever possible.  Lay that throttle down.  t^

Go to any boat store and you'll find measuring cups that have marks by the gallon for all different mixtures, 50:1, 40:1, 32:1 24:1, etc..  They make it very easy to know what the right amount is.
The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the sea.

I ran a 225 Evinrude at about 40-1 for 1600 hours.  Once a summer I used the carbon buster that OMC sells ( you inject it through the carbs) and I also used carbon guard in the gas. Did make some smoke on start up but not once it was warmed up.

You guys got it. 50:1. Carbon Guard once a year. I use high grade oils only, meaning Engine Manufacturers oils in my motors. For OMC its XD 50 semi synthetic. I like the OMC measuring cups the best.
