8-12 Lavalette Beach
« on: August 12, 2010, 07:50:19 AM »
Fished by rocks off the surf from Washington Street here in Lavalette. Vacation with the family. Fished last night for 2 hours, current wasn't as strong as last 2 nights couldn't stay straight with 7 ounces , takes off left in 50 seconds. Anyway, just caught a skate and something I couldn't determine. Maybe a pound in weight, maybe 14 inches, looked like a sucker and had thin black stripers going on an angle. Croaker or kingfish? t^

That's what it sounds like.

Good try though.  I hit up 89th in LBI last night, only produced a skate.   rgmn

perhaps reelnauti can chime in and provide some insight on the mystery fish.  The Cock Robin had a pic of something like that on their FB page this week.
I also read elsewhere this week of someone looking for an ID on a fish like that caught along that same beach.  Guesses were a jack or rudderfish.

Thanks guys, and thanks for the help. Just looked up pictures of jack and rudder, neither of them looks like the fish I caught. These black stripes were faint, and the fish was kind of silver/shiny. And had a head that kind of was slanted down like a sucker fish. Wasn't a big fish, but took the squid.

Good try!  Rips are pretty bad out there recently.  Sounds like a croaker, with the "stripes" you are describing?

Kingfish and very tastey. Where there is one there should be plenty more. You may want to try a kingfish or porgy rig with 2 oz. Cast in a sweep  , you do not need to get it out very far. Just slide it in a stop for minute or so then slide it a few feet and do the same. Once you locate the school hammer away.Small pieces of clams or worms may work better than squid. Great fighters and better eaters. Looks like the surf will be a little (a whole lot) rough this weekend. Good luck and post some reports
