Thanksgiving weekend marks the final run for most anglers but don’t worry, New Jersey has plenty of charters to choose from. This time of the year there are even more species to target inshore and offshore.

Brielle, Captain Jerry aboard the Fish Monger has been picking away at blackfish most of the week. Captain Jerry ended the weekend with a great trip producing fish up to 9lbs and everyone hitting their limits to end a great weekend.

Sandy Hook, Captain Ron Fishermen, has been working extra hard through some real windy weather in search of bass. The Fishermen is still picking up some nice size fish on jigs. Captain Ron is still sailing daily for a few more shots at some fall bass. If the fish are biting, Captain Ron will find them.

Captain Bob aboard Sandy Hook Fishing Adventures had his annual Turkey Day bass trip with his brother Captain Mike and his son Matt. Captain Bob worked the channels near Sandy Hook with birds working the crew jigged up a few keepers and when they slowed down they switched to the troll and landed a few more keepers up to 34 inches. The crew had plenty of action including playing catch and release with over twenty shorts, a great way to end the weekend for Sandy Hook Fishing Adventures.

Brielle, The Big Jamaica had their first offshore trip  and produced some giant sea bass, jumbo porgies, cod and Pollock up to 35LBS. Pool winners were Ted Judkins from Newark, N J with a 35LB Pollock. Ted also caught 2 cod and 20 porgies and sea bass. Alex Characach from Trenton took second place with a 25LB Pollock. Alex also caught 5 cod and 20 bass and porgies. The Big Jamaica also hit the Mud Hole over the weekend and produced a very good catch of ling with a few sea bass and cod mixed in. The pool winner on the Mud Hole trip was Reggie Shubert from New Castle, DE with a 12LB cod. High hook was Chris Steinert from Brick NJ with 42 ling and a cod. Attention Hard core anglers the Big Jamaica will be sailing offshore through December in search of cod, ling, pollack, porgies and sea bass. For more dates and availability check them out on the web.

Did You Know?

The Mud Hole is the Hudson River's channel where it collects all the silt and sediment that the river carries out to sea, making it a fertile fishing ground. The depth ranges from 130 to 200 ft where river water mixes with sea water and suspended particles form a constant snow of sediment in a process known as flocculation. This makes the Mud Hole very dark and turbid conditions, often with visibility measured in inches and total darkness at the bottom.

The Mud Hole deepens into the Glory Hole which deepens further into the Hudson Canyon, which follows the path of a seismic fault, and eventually runs off the edge of the continental shelf over a mile deep. Along the northeast edge of the Mud Hole is a relatively shallower plateau known as the Monster Ledge, on which lies the most well known and accessible Mud Hole wreck, the Arundo wreck.

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.
