I'm in the marker for a VHF radio
« on: March 03, 2011, 01:47:35 PM »
I am considering replacing my VHF radio. I currently have a Raytheon (tells ya how old this thing is) and want a new one with the DSC, etc.

West Marine currently has this one on sale: STANDARD HORIZON
GX2100 VHF Radio with Built-In AIS Receiver for $350. Anybody have anything good or bad on this. I know Standard Horizon makes a good radio.

Any sponsor input and price is welcome. Thanks.

I bought a standard horizon from west marine last year.
Not sure of the model but I donot think it is the model you are looking at. I have had no problems. Works well and I only have the 3ft antenna for it on my small boat

Joe,  Its a smart move getting the VHF with the AIS receiver. The new technology in these gadgets can be very helpful. Maritime Matt will hook you up. Also go to boat US, to register your DSC radio for a MMSI number, its free. You have to run a pair of wires to your GPS, You might find a radio that is compatable with the system you have now. I believe you have NMEA 2000 compatable electronics.

I have 2 Standard Matrix GX3000s commercial grade vhfs in stock. 1 black 1 white. NO AIS on these units. Here's the specs:

Class D DSC receiver
30 Watt Loud Hailer with built in fog signals
Larger alphanumeric display
Large rotary channel selector
Dual station capability when connected to the RAM+ or VH-310 second stations Microphones
Cosmetically designed to match existing products
Do you need a VHF at one, two or three stations? The MATRIX GX3000S is capable of using 2 Enhanced RAM+ microphones and/or VH-310 telephone-style handsets, allowing control of all VHF, DSC and hailer functions remotely. Capable of Class D DSC radio (dedicated channel 70 receiver continuously watches for DSC calls), powerful 30W loud hailer including listen back, fog signaling, bells and whistles, intercom along with an oversized channel selector knob and display. Another unique feature is the ability of the MATRIX to "poll" (request and send) the GPS location of another vessel and show that vessel's position on the radio's alphanumeric display. Connect a STANDARD HORIZON chart plotter to the MATRIX and the position of the polled vessel can be posted on the chart plotters display. This is a great feature for maintaining contact with fishing or cruising "buddy" boats.
I just installed one of these on my SeaRay and this radio is awesome. Check this price: $165.00 +tax.

 The GX 2100 w/ais runs $277.61 + tax.
Hope this helps.
Matt

Matt, sorry I didn't respond to you sooner. I've been busy trying to get some things done around the house and haven't been able to catch up on things yet.

I haven't done anything more in the line of getting or even checking radios. I am interested in the AIS feature.

Any idea of what the difference is between the Standard Horizon GX 2100 and the GX 2150?
