fishing off boat in LBI
« on: July 21, 2007, 01:05:25 PM »
Ok I am finally going to get the chance to fish off a boat at Long Beach Island next weekend. My uncle has a 24 foot boat and he said we can come down for the weekend and my cousin, and I can take it out. Now how am i supposed to know where fish are when I am out on the boat ? I dont think he has a fishfinder or anything, I am not sure he has done alot of fishing. Should I just go where the other boats are?? LOL, he has his boat in his backyard in the lagoon/bay, not at a marina. And I am not sure where exactly he is located, I think its Surf City/Beach Haven area. Thanks alot guys

Hi fishon,

Boy do you present some unique set of questions...

First have you ever piloted a boat that size before?

Have you taken any CG classes before?

Has the boat been in the water this year and maintained?

Is all the necessary CG equipment on board?

I would make sure all is right with the boat before I ventured out and looked for fishing spots.

I would find out if he has any charts, that would make it a lot easier to give you locations to fish down there especially not knowing the area at all.

Plus the guys will probably jump in here with other things that I have not mentioned.

Happy Catching

Happy Birthday Mark,

20 huh wow if only...na I won't go there.

Enjoy it.

The way it sounded was like your uncle was going to let you take the boat out your self.  I am glad it is going to be a family thing. TT^

Ok, so real quick. Just found out some more information on the whereabouts of my Uncles house. He is located in Beach Haven West, and it is the first right before the bridge on route 72 to get to the island. His house is right on the corner of the lagoon and the bay. His boat is docked in the lagoon. Its a 24 foot boat, not sure what kind. My uncles brother is the one with a license to drive it. So, if that helps anyone to figure out where i should go out to catch some fluke or seabass, i'm not sure i want to go out a ways like miles and miles, but if thats the best spot then i will.  ;D ;D

once you shoot across the bay and pick up the international waterway you'd be about 9 miles in either direction from barnehat inlet to your north or little egg inlet to the south.  the LE reef would be about another 6-8 miles from the inlet. if weather is nice it would be a nice ride otherwise i'm sure you can locate some fluke in the bay. t^

does your uncle have the chart for the south end of LBI?

Hey Bob,
I dont think that he does. I am not even sure that he fished all that much, but he will be fishing this weekend I'll tell ya that  ;). I am sure I will do alright, I'll feel around in the Bay for a while, then I'll head out into the ocean either north or south just like you said. Thanks  t^

mark, just stay in the channel at all times! if you don't have a chart try and pick one up prior to your trip and study it well.

while uncle runs the boat you should count off the bouys and write them down and reverse them for the return trip. if your uncle knows the area well then no worries.

look around for some boats and look to see if they are anchored or drifting. if drifting fall in behind and join the fleet. t^

it really depends on the boat and the tide. the bay is really shallow so if you see other boats drifting and thier boats look about the same size as yours then jump in!

thats why a chart is worth the money since you can see the depth of the areas you'd like to try. t^
