Shark Report - 6/18
« on: June 20, 2011, 02:38:09 PM »
Just posted my intro so I figured I would follow it up with a report.  We broke BI around 6:30am for our first offshore trip of the season and ran south-southeast. Lines were sent out and we had a good slick going by 7:30. Nothing for about an hour until the middle line goes off, I quickly got it to the boat, leadered and removed the hook from a small mako about 75 pounds. I sent the middle bait back out and within 30 minutes the deep rod with a whole bluefish gets hit, after a 45 minute fight we have another mako next to the boat estimated to be 175-185 pounds, whatever it weighed it was to big for just me and my gf to get in the boat, (my normal crew canceled at 4am). We cut the hook and sent the lines back out. Around 11:00, bluefish came through the slick, we caught a few and tossed them in the live well. I sent out a bluefish under a kite which only splashed on the surface for a few minutes (once I got the bait swimming and not flying!) before getting attacked. What a sight! The shark missed it the first two times, but finally the third time we were hooked up. After an 1.5 hour fight and chasing this fish all over we finally see color only to find out that we hooked a 200-220 pound blue shark right behind the dorsal. I was exhausted after that but wanted one for the table so we headed back to the end of our slick and set the lines back out one last time. The middle line gets hit within 15 minutes, as my gf is clearing the short line she hooks up as well, at one point we had two makos on and another one biting the outboard. Thankfully she lost hers so we could land mine, I leadered him and she secured the tail rope. Not bad for her second time fishing! A lot of work without my normal crew, but a memorable day on the water.

Awesome report and welcome aboard! You aren't by any chance docked in bayville off of Allen road are you?  That lagoon looks familar. My fathers house/boat is on centerboard dr.

Will do. We run a yellow 27 polar cc. Usually down there on Mondays or Tuesdays. Kicking myself for not being out sea bassin right now. The gusty sw forecast made me decide to save some gas.
