July 1 Fluke Report

Fished a NS out of Keyport. Early on had the very tail end of the incoming with a NNW wind of less than 10. Started in the back. I fished a 1.5 white Spro tipped with a 4" GULP new penny shrimp and rigged a 2/0 stand-out hook 10"s above it tipped with a 3" GULP new penny shrimp all day. Slow pick at best. Really not much movement. Second drift yielded a pair of keepers. Kept moving eastward during the day. By 10 AM the tide started to run out and coupled with the wind provided a nice drift and the fishing improved. Drift lasted almost 2 hours. Ran back to start another but the wind shifted to the SE and it was back to a pick.

I ended the day with 3 keepers out of 11 fluke. Missed another 6-8 bites. A 15 foot section midships port side was the place to fish as there was one limit-also had the pool winner (I happened to fish with this young man on Father's Day-anyway he was fishing with his father who happened to be the owner of the Keyport Fishery-he asked to borrow some GULP shrimp from me after seeing how well I did with them on Father's Day, as soon as he put one on he was putting fish over the rail consistently-needless to say I was repaid the kindness back at the dock  ) and a father/daughter combo each had 6-also using the GULP 4" shrimp.

Never seen these before. Will have to check them out.

Read about them in Florida Sportsman magazine about 3 winters ago in an article about drop shot finesse fishing for largemouth bass and though I could apply them to rig a soft plastic over a bucktail for fluke. I was thinking more along the lines of 4" Fin~s. Mister Twister or Fluke Zoom type plastic but as luck would have it, GULP was just bursting on to the scene. Just as a side note, I've also baited the stand-out hook with a big killie and it also proved to be very effective. It's be a highly effective rig for me in the bay & rivers,(just ask Capt. Allen from the Reel Class how I caught almost 120 fluke one day on it). Never tried it in the ocean yet.
