Headed out on Sunday evening with my buddy Smitty to the Barnegat Inlet to see if any life was around. As we ventured down the main drag towards the lighthouse, you could see the skies were about to unleash some fury, and that it did. We waited out the storm for about an hour and off we went. Once we got to the lighthouse, in the distance you could see a massive amount of birds working the mouth of the inlet. Curious as to what was out there, we took the crappy hike out to the point. Once we got out there, it was a good 2 hours of shad & baby blue action. They were jumping out of the water like crazy. Figured there was something bigger under them pushing them up, so I tried live-lining one of them, with no takers. It was fun playing around with the little guys for a while!
Monday morning, Fireman Ed and I ventured back out to the inlet, this time armed with some killies in search of fluke. We did well on shorts on the high side of the tide in the AM until a lady angler (first-time fluker) squeezed in between us and started bangin' flatties like it was her job! Her hubby taught her well. She totally stole our mojo. I had 5 with the biggest going at about 16"-17". Ed wound up pulling one and a sea robin. Seemed that white was the best color out there in the pocket, and I had no takers on the chartreuse Gulp. Had something to do so we left the rocks by 10am. Did what I needed to do and ventured back out with Ed and this time Ry-Ry in tow also, to see if there was any action on the ebb. Nada. Walking off the rocks, I was told that a group of people, just left with a bag full of nice sized tog. Pissed off at that news, I double timed it back towards the lot to find the so-called tog poachers to give them an earful. Sure enough I caught up to them, only to find that it wasn't blackfish they were taking, but a bunch of nice sized triggerfish.
All fish on both days for me were caught on some teasers that Chris was kind enough to hook me up with. Naked for the shad, and killie tipped for the flatties. Thanks bud.
