I had an extra day off and had the pleasure of joining Capt. Joe on board the Irish Ayes yesterday. Plan was to try to locate some bunker and hopefully some striped ones. Joe mentioned the bunker had been popping up locally in the afternoons, so we set out around noon. Joining us were Hunter2 Eddie "I don't have to go back to work 'til August" and John.
Beautiful day as we broke the inlet and Joe methodically moved around searching for signs of life. Not much happening, so we decide to switch it up and rig for fluke. John hooks up immediately with a just short. Repeat the drift and he hooks up again on a thick 19"er. A few more shorts landed by John has us wondering what he's doing that we're not...
Capt. moved around a bit, repeated a few drifts, I think everyone had a few shorts, couple garbagefish, etc. Heard Rod on the radio coming in from about 55miles out. Glad we didn't have THAT ride. Then seemingly out of nowhere Joe spies a pod of bunks pop up. Break out the snaggers and impale a few waiting for somebody underneath. Eddie pulls out these grappling hooks, I thought we were gonna be scaling tall buildings any minute with them. Snagged 'em pretty good, but no such bass luck. Followed the pod south for a bit, then they went deep. Back to flukin'...
Bunker strips were producing, as well as the usual squid and Peruvian schmelts. No more keepers for us, though. Found another pod of bunks and back into snag mode, but same story. Near the end we motored to Joe's "Go-to" bass spot and put out a few chunks, but again the fish just weren't there. Headed in and called it a good day.
Thanks again for the invite Joe, hopefully we can fish together again soon!
