Barnegat Inlet 7-14-11
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:08:21 AM »
Hit up the BI with Fireman Ed and buddy Paul.  We headed out to the end of the South Jetty to see what was going on.  Paul was doing well with some cocktail blues on metals and light tackle as soon as we got out there.  Ed and I were snorkeling around the pocket to see what was around.  Saw a bunch of fluke, small blackfish & triggerfish, and TONS of bait everywhere.  The tip of the North & South jetties had about 1000 birds banging the water on all the bait.  At one point I was in a school of what I think were peanut bunker, about a million thick.  I was surrounded. Was pretty cool.  On our way back off the jetty, we started crushing the shad on little metals around the first "kink" of the walkway.  A little 3/4 oz. silver Crippled Herring paired with a LeLong teaser was getting attacked on every cast.  Little guys, but fun nonetheless.  At times, they were coming 2 feet out of the water.  Switching to larger metals produced nothing for us, thinking there was some bigger fish under them chasing them up.

All in all a fun night.  Bring some light tackle down there, and you'll have a blast near the end of the flood stage.  Small metals are the key.  I'd bet they'd be a good time on a fly rod.

I picked up a set of fins, snorkel, & a mask from Dick's Sporting Goods for $69.99.  Not a bad price and the equipment seems to be of good quality.

Nice going Jason. t^

Come up to the store sometime and talk to Paul.  He is an experienced free-diver and he spearfishes around the jetties for fluke, blackfish and stripers.

Great report and some cool experiences ......... I highly recommend 2 dive flags when in that area. One on the vessel and a a floater on a short leash with the diver.  Also get yourself a nice Hawaiian sling or pole spear to really add to the fun......................  Its cool when the sea herring and some hickory shad join the mix. I like the "Poormans tarpon" more than the small blues because they are some real jumpers. The only down side is the piles of scales they leave on the boat. They like to stack on the tide change between the 40foot hole near the base of the Lighthouse and the shoal to the east. If the blues are not to thick I like a 4 " finesse with another finesse on a dropper hook for a teaser.
