Help feeling the bottom
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:26:43 AM »
On went out to IBSP the other day with the great info I got from this forum and tried to get some Fluke. Well I go hothing in the way of fish but did learn a few things. My question. I had a hard time felling my jig hit the bottom. I was using a 1oz butail with a teaser on it. I don't know if it was the wind or the surf or both. But I never really had an idea where the bait was. Any help would be awesome.
Keep your hooks in the water and your bait fresh.

Ah....   One once seems a little light for the surf.  Maybe on a calm flat day.
Maybe not.  Idk.

you probably needed a heavier bucktail. Also, what is the rating of the rod you were using?

The currents off the beach lately have been a tad swift.  We have been a strong north sough current and holding bottom with even 4 oz is rough to do.  If you see your line going north to south cast to the north and keep your line sort of taught, you should feel the bucktail bouncing along the bottom.

But yeah, go to a heavier bucktail.

If you want to know what it feels like when your bucktail hits the bottom practice in the shallow water where you can still see the sand.  You will be able to see and get the same feeling as you would if you had casted out.  I use this when I get a new lure and want to see how it "acts" in the water.

Thank you to all. I will try them all.
