Major Flooding expected Here
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:19:44 PM »
They are predicting Catastrophic Levels In our rivers and streams In the Northeast part of PA . We have had a band of storms stalled over our area . We have received 3 months worth of rain in a short period of 4 days and more to come.  They are predicting the Susquehanna river to crest at 38 ft. by Friday.  To give a comparison, In 1972, our worst flooding disaster it crested at 42ft which broke through our Dikes, Flooded the cities of Wilkes- Barre and Kingston and surrounding boroughs for about a 40 mile radius  almost up to the traffic Lights. I just hope this is not a repeat. I pulled the boat out of the water today as the level of the lake will rise higher than when Irene come through.  I might also need it for transportation fcp. Keeping our fingers crossed

That just sucks!  Good luck and be safe...remember "Run from water, hide from wind!"

Amazing how a tropical system that has been over land for days and has traveled 1000's of miles can cause more damage inland than to the coast.

Well, Evacuation orders are still in effect but, the River is receding slowly. It was thought it  crested at 38.6 ft. but they later found out that the equipment was faulty and indeed it crested at 42.6 ft, which is higher than the  1972 Agnes disaster  readings.  Luckily The work the Army corps of engineers performed on the dike system in the Wilkes Barre and Kingston area since, has made the difference and we are being spared.  Although we are not out of the woods yet. Areas upstream and down stream of us have not been so lucky as you probably have been seeing on the news. Anyway, here are some pics I took today along the Susquehanna river From the Kingston, PA Side.  1:  Water running from the temporary flood walls  that are installed across the Market st. bridge which connects Kingston To Wilkes Barre. 2: Are the flood walls . 3: bridge pillars  4: Light post at the boat ramp( use your imagination on this one, there is really a boat ramp under there)
5:Looking across at Wilkes Barre. 6: Another pic of the bridge.

Altho not a near as bad as Western PA or Texas, Blairstown NJ is heavily flooded as well, due to a rising Paulinskill river. My gf who lives 2 houses from the river is currently flooded but the water is going down. She sent me a picture on my phone, let me see if I can attach it. This is her backyard with the river flowing right thru it.

Great pics(crazy)!

This weather is insane, but not unfamiliar or unheard of before.  This La Nina which we have been in the last few months will most likely continue for 12 more or so...  La Nina always brings cooler Pacific Ocean temps(lots of shark sightings reported in CA this summer), wetter weather to the West and Northwest out in the Midwest and into the Middle Atlantic and dry conditions in the South and Southwest.
