Stinger Hook
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:00:01 PM »
Over the weekend I was using a snapper as bait and I hooked him around the dorsal area, I got a hit but nothing to show for it because whatever it was bit only the tail off. It was suggested that I use a stinger hook but I couldn't wrap my head around how to set the rig up. I tried searching it and all I came up with was a stinger hook for lures and jigs. So how can I set up a rig with a stinger hook while using small snappers as bait? Pictures or diagrams would be helpful lol.

Bucktail Bob had a how-to write up somewhere on here.  It's was for a jig, but I'd think it would be the same idea on a bait rig.

One way is take a piece of braid and tie it in a loop via a double overhand knot.now take the tag side of the loop and put it through the eye of the stinger hook.next take the loop end  end and pull it through the tag end like joining two rubber bands together. Your left with a hook tide to a loop. Hold the loop straight up take the top of the loop and fold it down.it should looke like a bull yes the animal. Now take the two new loops" the bulls ears" and fold them in to each other. You should now have one double loop. Stick the main hook through this loop and pull it tight finish buy putting a drop of glue on both ends.this way allows you to make different spreads to compensate for differnt size baits. There's a post on here by bucktail that teaches you another way. There's many ways as the rest of the guys may tell you there's but that's the way I do it. A friend of mine takes fish tank tubing its 1/8" amd cuts it into 1/4" pieces he takes the piece of tubing places it over the eye of the stinger and then puts the main hook through both the tubing and eye of the stinger hook. I've done that also but with shrink tube so you can heat it up and the stinger stays in place. Hope that helps

Hey gym rat, I like to keep it as simple as possible.  Simply slide the hook through the mouth of the bait out the gills and hook the hook near the tail of the bait of choice.  The bait will swim in a straight line and if there is a strike at the tail you will have that covered.

If you want both covered just tie on 2 hooks with varied lengths of leader hook one wherever and the other I mentioned above.

Happy Catching

I used that article this past winter to make stinger hooks for bucktailing fluke. It cost me just over 20 bucks to make around 35 stinger hooks. clp Also Chuck from Tournament Tackle also showed us when we went to his seminar back in January or when ever it was.  TT^
