I'm trying to find out if I can use regular home depot type pvc for the plumbng in my boat or if I need to use the heav duty chemical resistant plastic stuff.  I am plumbing my fishboxes and baitwell and all of the old plumbing is gone.   I posted this question on 2 other sites but got no response so I can only assume that this is a real dumb question,,,or no one knows the answer.... bngh bngh bngh

Mako,

What are you going to use it for? This would depend on what schedule (thickness) to get. t^

i dont see why it wouldn't work.. Boats, Homes, as long as it quality, it should hold up.. There are homes on the water also... that have to hold up to the salt air..
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

I am by no means an expert on this but...I do know that direct exposure to sunlight will affect PVC.  Over time it will deteriorate and break.  That is a good possibility with any of the plastic pipe you use.

If you have plastic rod holders permanently mounted on your boat you will see them get easily broken after they get older.

If no exposure to direct sunlight, I don't think you would have a problem.

I agree with Irish Ayes Joe. I have seen some of the PVC exposed to the Sun and eventually crack very easy.
To attempt to answer the original question, I would ask a boat manufacturer or one of these local dealers what they use.Maybe they know or maybe not. PVC is used in  houses and all over, but is there a Code for chemical use.Maybe a call to Boat Us would help.  AJ

This is what I used since it was free. I replumbed the entire boat in the last 2 weeks. 2 fish boxes and a live well with wash down pump, live well pump, and 2 bilge pumps.  Painted the bilge and drilled out the old copper sleeve for the bilge drain and epoxied in a piece of pvc and installed a garboard drain plug. replaced a thru hull for the old live well drain in case my new system doesn't  work. other wise its capped off.

Nice. I am thinking of adding a 2nd biat well to my setup since their is a factory option for 2 (mine does not have it tho). I am thinking of using my existing inlet, running a Y off of that and adding a 2nd pump to pump into the well.

Think my man Young Gull can help me with that one :)

You don't have to worry about chemically resistant PVC for your boat piping. Standard Sch.40 PVC is chemical resistant to most acidic hosehold properties (i.e. drain cleaners, tile and shower cleaners, softscrub, etc.)
So being able to clean out your boat with these simple cleaners is fine.
Make sure that you use pressure type fittings, not drainage type fittings.

You can find the MSDS sheet for SCH.40 PVC pipe from here:
