Any HVAC guys here?
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:40:14 AM »
If so have a question about duct be encased in the slab of a house. My son is looking at a home with gas hot air heat. Only place I was able to see was directly under the furnace. I couldn't see any type of lining or insulation. Any home that I have ever seen on a slab everything was run in the attic. It looks like all the duct was formed in the slab. I can see problems with this but what do I know. If anyone has any info on this type of system I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!!  slt

In my past exp., i'd say be wary. Back in the mid 90's in NE Philly several areas were done like that. Duct's rotted leading to damp, musty, moldy air. Let alone radon problems. Large amount of homes still had lead drains that were failing at the same time creating an even worse mess. Over 1 1/2 years and two crews changing lead bend's and drain's . Really felt sorry for the people, mainly retired folk's.

yes be very concerned duct designs such as these can spread mold very quickly from the corrrosion and moisture leakage in the duct work

Thanks NJ Guy. I told my kid if he is really interested to get a HVAC guy in there and do a good inspection of the whole system. Even scope the ducts if necessary.
