Pier Fishing Tackle
« on: October 03, 2011, 07:17:36 AM »
Morning All:
Just getting into the pier fishing world and need some advice on tackle...fishing off Keansburg pier at the moment...

1) Hooks...I would like to have an assortment available...perhaps depending on the time of year/ fish available...What sizes and type would be best to have...?

2) Leaders...some have told me that braided line is the best...but use a Mono leader. Are their companies that make leaders or should you make your own...? I used a rental rod this past weekend and it had a brown leader on it...I know why I used to fly fish you could buy leaders for most every situation...

3) Line Setup...again I'm only going on what I rented but it had a 30lb mono reel with a 3 pt swivel...One used for the weight - one for the leader...Is this the best setup?

4) Weights...forgot to check the rig I had this weekend...so any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for the help.

First of all what are you fishing for, that whatever bites bit is hard to prepare for, it is easier to target a specific species. Second get your own rod, that 1970 penn power sticks or whatever the rental rods are, sure thell do the job but it won't be as fun as having gear to match your catch.right bow the fall stripers are gonna start so I would reccomend buying a spinning combo with a few fishfinder rigs and a handfull of 3-4oz sinkers, then keep reading the reports here.
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

my suggestion to you is to go over to the tacklebox on rt 36 give them a spending limit and tell them you want to go fishing for striped bass on keansburg pier....they are good guys and wont F you over....either that or stop by keyport marine basin this weekend and ill give you some pointers for gear and show you what you should get. good luck

Welcome  grtn

The two rigs you'll most likely want to use are the Hi Lo rig and the fishfinder.  Both of which you can find in most tackle shops.  They can be connected (via a swivel) directly to the braid main line.  The mono they are made of will act as your leader.  A separate leader is only needed is you're fishing artificials.

This thread has a good description of the fishfinder (bottom of page 1).

Good luck and enjoy.

Appreciate all the info...

If I may...one last question...for a larger setup I was told that a 30lb mono line would be best...

Do you think the Shimano SP14000FB Spheros FB with 30lb mono would be a good start...

Thanks,
KM

braided line without a doubt for striped bass even 50 pound power pro braid would be a great choice especially since your fishing from a pier...

That 14000 is a huge reel and probably more suited to tuna than stripers and bluefish.  I would recommend something more along the lines of a 5000 or 6000 size reel for what you're doing.

All good choices I would pick something a little more universal, say an 8' tica with a penn battle reel. You can fish the pier, surf,or party boat with that put 50lb braid on it and you'll be ready to go for almost anything.these are good products without being overly exspensive.
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
