Very nice for your first try.  ;)

Two things:

1.  You don't need a brush to apply the flex coat.  You can just use your finger.  I actually prefer that method.

2.  A few wraps of masking tape around the end of the blank will prevent those marks you got on the rod from the drill chuck.
