Hunter 2, Schoolies MON,11/14/2011
« on: November 14, 2011, 07:27:18 PM »
After a morning obligation, pulled out of Keyport at 12 pm with Cashin and his buddy Keith who is a Marine and raised in Matawan and is stationed in San Diego, The water was pretty flat with a light southwest wind, sunny sky, outgoing tide my water temp sensor is still on the blink and reads 154 deg to -4 deg. I think we were somewhere in between. ???  We had clams and eels and were going to head over towards the roundhouse between Breezy point and Sheepshead bay and look for birds on the way. We got a call on the VHF stating of some bird action on sand eels outside the hook. Thankyou Capt!! Trying to get Keith on some fish before dark we head over to the outside of the hook in the shallows with the nice swells rolling in. First setup was a yellow shad umbrella rig and a tube umbrella rig. Trolling in 10 to 20' of water both rods bent over and we had triple schoolie Stripers on each. Then next set we had another triple and a double.  We got the pattern down on our trolling grid on the gps and hooked up every pass even after the birds thinned out. We changed up the shad rig for a Spoon with no luck, It was hard to get it working right with the boat surfing on the swells with a following sea. We tried a T-Man red tube rig and that produced fish too. The eel umbrella rig was consistant all day. Keith was feeling a bit sick with the swells and he and Cashin had a late night chrz at the Jets game. 2am!! chrz chrz chrz   We moved to calmer water by the 11 and 12 cans drifting eels for a bit around 3:45 pm with no luck,, We did see some Stripers landed with eels on a couple of highlands charter boats. t^  Back at the dock at 4:45 pm with only one keeper out of 20 Stripers landed and counted on the handy CLICKER, The raritan bay became flat on the ride back to Keyport, we would have stayed out longer but the Marines need Keith back in Cali tommorrow morning. slt slt
  Good Luck!,,,  Eddie t^
